Serbian 401 — who you gave it to, who you helped, who you're buying for.
Same rule as the genitive: the owner is the subject, so it's svoj every time. What changes is the ending, because the dative answers kome? — to whom.
| Gender / number | Dative | Example |
|---|---|---|
| m. / n. sg. | svom | pomogao sam svom bratu |
| f. sg. | svojoj | šta si dala svojoj koleginici? |
| plural | svojim | šta si dala svojim sestrama? |
| deca, braća | svojoj | šta si dala svojoj deci? |
That last row is the one to memorise. Deca and braća mean more than one person, and English translates them as plurals — but grammatically they are feminine singular collective nouns. They decline like žena: deca, dece, deci · braća, braće, braći. So the possessive that goes with them is svojoj, not svojim.
Compare them with real plurals in the same sentence frame: svojim sestrama, svojim kolegama, svojim prijateljima. Those take -im. Svojoj deci and svojoj braći don't.
Svojem is an equally correct longer form of svom, and it's accepted below.
1. Šta ćeš kupiti drugaricama za rođendan?
2. Šta ćeš kupiti sinu za rođendan?
3. Kako si pomogao bratu?
4. Šta si dala sestrama?
5. Kako si pomogao prijateljima?
6. Kako si pomogao ženi?
7. Šta si dala koleginici?
8. Šta si dala deci za rođendan? (zbirna imenica!)
9. Šta ćeš kupiti drugarici za rođendan?
10. Šta si dala kolegama?
11. Šta si dala braći za rođendan? (zbirna imenica!)
12. Šta ćeš kupiti mužu za rođendan?
