Serbian 401 — getting in, getting out, getting off, and carrying your suitcase through all of it.
Each of these verbs comes with a preposition welded to it, and the preposition decides the case. Learn them as one unit — the verb alone is only half the word.
| Verb | Preposition + case | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ići | no preposition — instrumental | ići vozom |
| ući | u + akuzativ | ući u auto |
| izaći | iz + genitiv | izaći iz auta |
| sići | sa + genitiv | sići sa voza |
| uneti | u + akuzativ | uneti kofer u avion |
| izneti | iz + genitiv | izneti kofer iz voza |
| proći | kroz + akuzativ | proći kroz voz |
English uses get off for both, but Serbian sees two different pictures. Izaći iz voza is coming out of an enclosed space — you were inside it. Sići sa voza is coming down from something you were on top of or up in — the same word you'd use for stepping down off a stage. Both are correct for a train or a bus; sići just keeps the step down in view.
Two spellings worth a second look. Taksi ends in a vowel, so the instrumental takes -jem: taksijem, and the genitive is taksija. And auto loses nothing but changes quietly: u auto in the accusative, iz auta in the genitive.
No preposition at all — the ending does the work.
