Serbian 401 — seven little words that carry every direct object in the language.
Serbian has two sets of object pronouns: long ones for emphasis, and short ones for everything else. The short forms are what you actually hear.
| Nominativ | Kratki oblik | Dugi oblik |
|---|---|---|
| ja | me | mene |
| ti | te | tebe |
| on · ono | ga | njega |
| ona | je (i ju) | nju |
| mi | nas | nas |
| vi | vas | vas |
| oni · one · ona | ih | njih |
The short forms are clitics, exactly like sam, si, je from the verb BITI — they are too weak to start a sentence and they cannot be stressed. Volim te is ordinary; if you want to stress you, you must switch to the long form: Volim tebe, ne nju.
One overlap worth naming: ga covers both him and it for masculine and neuter nouns, and je is both her and it for feminine ones. So Koristim ga can mean I use him or I use it, depending on what you were talking about — and Kupujem je is almost always about a thing, not a person.
The alternative ju exists for the feminine, and appears mainly to avoid two je sounds colliding: video ju je rather than "video je je".
Two words each time — the verb and the pronoun.
