Advanced Serbian Lessons

Idiom, register, and the difference between correct and convincing.

Built from what my students bring me

At C1 a syllabus stops helping. The gaps are personal by then — one student needs the language of a job interview, another wants to follow a podcast, a third keeps stumbling over jokes. So these lessons are built from the topics, texts and sources my students bring, and the material below is what came out of those sessions.

Three threads run through all of it. Collocations, because at this level vocabulary is learned in pairs, not singly. Register — the same thought said to a friend, a clerk and a court, and how far apart those are in Serbian. And authentic material: real texts about real places, not sentences written to demonstrate a rule.

The best test of all of it is teaching. Explaining a Serbian rule out loud, in Serbian, exposes exactly what you haven't understood — and it's more fun than it sounds.
