Video kviz — Serbian Lessons by Marina
Comparing two things in Serbian needs one extra word, and it drags a case behind it. After the comparative you say od, and whatever follows goes into the genitive:
| Nominativ | Genitiv | Cela rečenica |
|---|---|---|
| konj | konja | Slon je veći od konja. |
| zebra | zebre | Tigar je opasniji od zebre. |
| žirafa | žirafe | Puž je manji od žirafe. |
There's a second way that avoids the case entirely: nego plus the plain nominative — Slon je veći nego konj. Both are correct, and Serbs use both, but od + genitive is the shorter and more common one.
And the comparative still agrees with the first noun: slon je veći but žirafa je veća.
1. velik → · velika →
2. mali → · mala →
3. lep → · lepa →
4. opasan → · opasna →
Only the second animal changes — put it in the genitive.
1. Slon je veći od . (konj)
2. Žirafa je veća od . (zebra)
3. Puž je manji od . (pčela)
4. Medved je veći od . (jelen)
5. Osa je manja od . (gorila)
6. Konj je veći od . (tigar)
7. Zebra je manja od . (slon)
8. Tigar je opasniji od . (puž)
1. Slon je (velik) od (pčela).
2. Pčela je (mala) od (medved).
3. Žirafa je (velika) od (osa).
4. Gorila je (opasna) od (zebra).
SR (lat): Posle OD ide genitiv. Nije osetljivo na velika/mala slova, i može latinicom ili ćirilicom; dijakritici su opcioni.
СР (ћир): После ОД иде генитив. Није осетљиво на велика/мала слова, и може латиницом или ћирилицом; дијакритици су опциони.
EN: OD is followed by the genitive. Not case-sensitive; Latin or Cyrillic both fine, diacritics optional.
Animal idioms are next — veran kao pas, gladan kao vuk.
