← Numbers: Exercise 3

SAM / SI / JE / SMO / STE / SU

You've met sam, si, and je one at a time. Now the whole verb, singular and plural together — six small words that carry an enormous amount of Serbian.

Here's the complete present-tense conjugation of biti (to be):

ja sam — I am  ·  ti si — you are  ·  on/ona/ono je — he/she/it is
mi smo — we are  ·  vi ste — you (plural/formal) are  ·  oni/one/ona su — they are

The pattern to notice: plural forms almost always end differently from their singular counterpart, and once you've got all six, you can build a sentence about literally anyone — yourself, a friend, your dog, a whole classroom.
