← Full Conjugation: Exercise 4

JE ili SU?

OVO JE = this is. OVO SU = these are. One word tells you whether you're pointing at one thing or several — no plural -s needed anywhere else in the sentence.

English marks plural on the noun (book → books) and barely touches the verb (is → are). Serbian does the reverse for "this is/these are": the noun changes its own ending for plural, and so does the verb — but you don't need to know noun plurals yet to get this right. Just look at the ending in front of you: if it already looks plural, use su; if it's a single thing, use je.
