Cerak — Vrste Reči

Serbian 801 — sorting words into what they actually are, on a text about a Belgrade neighbourhood.

Cerak Vinogradi is a housing estate in Belgrade built in the late nineteen-seventies and eighties, designed by Darko and Milenija Marušić, and one of the few from that period that people are actually fond of — low blocks, red brick, trees left standing where they were.

The exercise asks you to name the parts of speech, which is duller than it sounds and more useful than it looks. Once you can say which class a word belongs to, you know what it can do.

The pair that catches everyone is pridev against prilog. In Serbian the neuter adjective and the adverb usually look identical: zeleno drvo (adjective, describing the tree) and zeleno se prostire (adverb, describing how). Same form, different job. The only way to tell is to ask what the word is attached to — a noun, or a verb.
