Serbian 701 — one prefix, one meaning: the moment an action begins.
Serbian prefixes are not decoration. Each one carries a meaning, and once you know it you can read verbs you have never seen. ZA- has several jobs, but the one in this exercise is the clearest: it marks the beginning of an action. Grammarians call it the ingressive or početno-svršeni aspect.
| Nesvršeni | ZA- oblik | Razlika |
|---|---|---|
| pevati — to sing | zapevati | to burst into song, to start singing |
| svirati — to play | zasvirati | to strike up |
| plivati — to swim | zaplivati | to set off swimming |
| voleti — to love | zavoleti | to come to love, to fall for |
| svetleti — to shine | zasvetleti | to light up, to come on |
English needs a whole phrase for this — burst into, strike up, set off, fall in love — where Serbian needs two letters. That is why these verbs feel so economical, and why translating them word by word never works.
Two of the nine break the pattern, and both are worth knowing about.
Spavati → zaspati, not *zaspavati. The stem shortens. And the meaning shifts further than the others: zaspati is not to start sleeping in a neutral sense but to fall asleep — the crossing of a threshold. Its opposite, probuditi se, has no ZA- at all.
Početi → započeti is the odd one out for a different reason. Početi is already perfective and already means to begin, so ZA- adds no ingressive meaning here — it only makes the verb more formal and slightly more deliberate: započeti pregovore, započeti projekat. In speech, početi is what people say.
Last thing: the ZA- forms are all perfective, so their past participles behave like any perfective past — zapevao, zapevala, zapevali, zapevale. In the second block, look at who is doing the action before you choose the ending.
