Serbian 501 — the four nouns every conversation about work is built on, and the adjectives that attach to them.
Learn these adjectives attached to something, not floating free. Four nouns take almost all of them:
| Imenica | Pridevi | Engleski |
|---|---|---|
| posao (m.) | dobar · loš · izazovan · zahtevan | a good · bad · challenging · demanding job |
| kancelarija (f.) | prostrana · moderna · mala | a spacious · modern · small office |
| plata (f.) | visoka · niska · mesečna | a high · low · monthly salary |
| šef / šefica | strog · neljubazan · ljubazan | a strict · unfriendly · friendly boss |
Notice the endings change with the noun's gender: dobar posao but dobra plata. That is why the list below gives every adjective in the masculine — it is the dictionary form, the one you adapt from.
Two traps worth naming. First, neprijatan and neljubazan are not the same word. Neprijatan means unpleasant — an unpleasant smell, an unpleasant silence. Unfriendly, of a person, is neljubazan. Both are accepted below, but only one is precise.
Second, plata covers both salary and wage; Serbian does not split them the way English does. If you need to be explicit, say mesečna plata or nedeljna plata. The old word for a day's or week's wage is nadnica, and it now sounds rural and dated.
And šefica is the everyday feminine of šef. It is normal, common, and not diminutive — unlike some other feminine job forms in Serbian, which are still argued about.
