Serbian 501 — eleven phrases from the world of teaching, and the case hiding in each one.
A collocation is two words that have decided to travel together. In Serbian they travel with a case attached, and that's the part you can't guess from English.
Nine of the eleven here take the plain accusative — dizajnirati kurs, držati predavanje, analizirati potrebe. Two don't, and both are betrayed by a preposition standing in front:
| Phrase | Preposition | Case |
|---|---|---|
| suočiti se sa problemom | sa | instrumental |
| dovesti do rešenja | do | genitiv |
So the preposition is your warning light. If you see sa, the noun ends in -om or -ma; if you see do, it's the genitive. No preposition, no problem — accusative.
Watch the feminine nouns while you're at it: nastava becomes nastavu, and the adjective goes with it — relevantnu tematiku. Masculine inanimates like kurs and pristup don't change at all, which makes them feel like a trick until you remember they never do.
One word to be careful with in English: pristup is an approach (or access), not an attitude. Imati dobar pristup means going about something the right way. Attitude, in the sense of what you think of it, is stav.
The bracket gives the nominative. Look at the verb — and at whether there's a preposition.
