Opiši Svoj Posao

Serbian 401 — the words for a job that doesn't let you sit down.

This set is built around one profession, and around a family of words that keeps reappearing once you notice it.

WordMeaningSame root
veštinaskillvešt-  — knowing how
veštskillful
veštakexpert  — sudski veštak, a court expert

And a word that carries two lives at once: poziv is a phone call — dobiti poziv, to get a call — but it's also a calling, a profession. Koji je vaš poziv? asks what you do for a living. Fitting, for an exercise about a job that calls you in at three in the morning.

Three little connectors are worth separating carefully, because they are not interchangeable. Iako joins two halves of one sentence — iako je umoran, radi dalje. Međutim opens a new sentence and turns it around — Međutim, sutra je slobodan. And čak is emphasis, not contrast: čak i vikendom, even at weekends.

Dežurati has no single English word. It means to be the one on duty — on call, covering the shift, the person they ring when something happens.
