Serbian 902 — the language of a report: abstract, careful, and impersonal on purpose.
The vocabulary of a public-health text on loneliness — the register of a newspaper leader or a ministry report, where nothing is said plainly and everything is nominalised.
The engine of that register is the abstract noun. Porast, gojaznost, usamljenost, podrška, okruženje — five nouns, five different suffixes, and each of them lets the writer describe a process without naming who is doing it. That is the point of the style, and it is why C2 reading feels heavier than C1.
| Word | Built from | Note |
|---|---|---|
| porast | porasti — to grow | the growth itself, always of a measurable thing |
| gojaznost | gojazan — obese | -ost, the workhorse suffix for qualities |
| okruženje | okružiti — to surround | a verbal noun: the surrounding, hence the surroundings |
| posledica | po + slediti — to follow | literally what follows — consequence |
Three phrases are worth taking whole. Svaliti krivicu na — to dump the blame onto somebody; svaliti is what you do to a heavy sack. Dovesti do takes the genitive: dovodi do srčanih oboljenja. And biti prijateljski nastrojen uses nastrojen, disposed or inclined — the same word gives you neprijateljski nastrojen, hostile.
Finally, iako ti se to ne radi is the whole grammar of reluctance in five words: an impersonal reflexive with a dative. Not you don’t want to, but it isn’t doing itself to you. Serbian is full of these, and they are the last thing a learner acquires.
