Autostopom na Koncerte

Serbian synonyms are rarely interchangeable. They differ by register, by region, and by how much feeling they carry — and choosing between them is the last thing a learner gets right.

Reach for the wrong column and you are still understood, but you sound like a translation. Putešestvovati in a conversation about the bus is a joke; in a travel essay it is exactly right.

Two words from this text worth keeping. Autostop is hitchhiking — the verb is autostopirati, and someone doing it is an autostoper. And svirka is a gig: less formal than koncert, warmer, and what you would actually say to a friend.
